Skin Care Travel Tips

Skin Care Travel Tips | Vichy

Whether you’re preparing for a holiday in the sun, on the slopes, or just a few states away, consider this: Air travel can take a toll on your skin. To help prepare you—and your skin—for traveling and to look great when you get away, check out our skin care travel tips below.

First things first, let’s lay out some of the skin care effects of traveling at a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet:

1. Dryness:

The recirculated air in airplane cabins is notoriously low in humidity which can lead to dry, tight, uncomfortable feeling skin.

2. Excess Oil:

When your skin is dehydrated it may overcompensate by producing excess oil which can in turn mix with dead skin cells and impurities—hello airplane bacteria—on the skin’s surface, clog pores, and lead to flight-related breakouts.

3. UV Damage:

When you’re up in the air you are closer to the sun, leaving you more susceptible to the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays.

4. Puffy Eyes:

Prolonged periods of time spent sitting can cause fluid retention, especially under your eyes which is a leading cause of puffy, swollen-looking eye bags.

How To Reduce the Appearance of Dark Spots

Now that you know what you might expect, it’s important to take steps to counteract and/or avoid the skin care effects of flying.

Used the night before, during the flight, and once you get to your final destination, face masks are a great way to target the concerns you may face during air travel. The night before you travel, prep your skin with an exfoliating face mask like Vichy’s Double Glow Peel Mask. Formulated with chemically exfoliating alpha-hydroxy acids and mechanically exfoliating volcanic rock, this face mask helps to remove dead skin cell buildup from skin’s surface—giving you a clean canvas for your flight—and can brighten the appearance of dull skin. During the flight reach for Vichy’s Quenching Mineral Face Mask. This hydrating no-rinse face mask is formulated with Vichy Mineralizing Water to help strengthen the skin’s moisturize barrier—a great way to defend your skin against the drying effects of cabin air. Once you land, ensure your skin is clean and purified by applying Vichy’s Mineral Pore Purifying Clay Mask. Formulated with two white clays—kaolin and bentonite—this clay infused mask helps to draw out excess oil and impurities—think: bacteria and germs that are floating around the cabin—like a magnet.

Micellar Water:

A must-have product for air travel is a micellar water. You can use these no-rinse cleansers to purify your skin on-the-go—even during the flight if your skin feels dirty. You’ll also want one in tow because one of the cardinal rules of face masks is not to use them on dirty skin. Prior to each use, cleanse your skin with a no-rinse micellar water cleansing solution like Vichy’s Pureté Thermale 3-in-1 One Step Solution. Reach for a travel-sized version or transfer the product into a TSA-approved container and using cotton pads, gently sweep the solution over your face until the pad comes away clean.

Moisturizer + SPF:

After cleansing and using your moisturizing mask, seal in all that goodness with a hydrating cream and broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen. After applying sunscreen—we recommend Idéal Capital Soleil SPF 50—use Aqualia Thermal Mineral Water Gel. This is an ultra-light cooling water gel moisturizer formulated with Vichy’s Mineralizing Thermal Water. It’s lightweight, non-sticky, and paraben-free—plus it’s small enough to fit in your carry on beauty bag! Using a moisturizer during air travel is key if you want to counteract the seriously dehydrating effects of the dry cabin air.

Eye Cream:

To beat the potential puffiness that can occur under your eye contour during long flights, be sure to bring along an eye cream. Aqualia Thermal Eye Balm is formulated with pure caffeine to counteract the signs of fatigue including dark circles and puffiness. As well, it features Dynamic Hydration technology to help distribute and lock in water and hyaluronic acid and Aquabioryl™ to help form a protective barrier on the skin.

Finally, no list of in-flight skin care travel tips would be complete without a thermal water spray and we may be biased but Vichy’s Mineralizing Thermal Water definitely takes the cake. The mineralizing water from the French volcanoes—rich in 15 essential minerals—helps to refresh and replenish skin. Spray it on whenever your skin needs a little extra TLC before, during, and after your flight. No carry-on is complete without it!
