How to Reduce the Look of Dark Spots & Sun Damage

06 May 2022

Over time many of us may experience dark spots and discoloration on our skin’s surface as a direct result of not adequately protecting our skin. Thankfully, there are steps we can take to visibly reduce the appearance of surface-level discoloration! Want a glowing, more even-toned complexion? Keep reading.

What causes Dark Spots?

Dark spots and discoloration on the skin’s surface occur when melanin—the pigment that gives skin its color—is produced in excess. This can happen for a number of reasons including:

  1. UVA and UVB Rays: Sun damage is the primary cause of discoloration—making wearing broad-spectrum SPF each and every day so important.
  2. Pollution: According to some studies, traffic-related air pollution may contribute to the appearance of dark spots.
  3. Hormones: With hormonal fluctuations—which can occur during pregnancy and menopause—discoloration like melasma can occur.

How to Reduce the Appearance of Dark Spots

While you can’t control external factors you can take steps to shield your skin from their effects.

Apply Sunscreen Liberally and Often: The only way to protect your skin from UV rays is to wear broad-spectrum SPF—even when it’s cloudy. A great option to wear under your makeup each day is LiftActiv Peptide-C Sunscreen SPF 30 . This fast-absorbing formula visibly reduced wrinkles, diminished appearance of dark spots and skin feels firmer after 8 weeks of use. What’s more it is formulated with antioxidants like Phyto Peptides and Vitamin C which can help to neutralize free radical damage—read: pollution!

Exfoliate Weekly: Using an exfoliating mask weekly can help to further resurface the appearance of skin and fade the look of dark spots and discoloration. Vichy’s Double Glow Peel Mask works by chemically and physically exfoliating the skin’s surface. The unique face mask is formulated with alpha-hydroxy fruit acids—for chemical exfoliation while it sits on the skin—and volcanic rocks—for physical exfoliation as it’s rinsed away. The double-peel action helps to give your skin a more refined texture and luminous appearance.

Note: After using your exfoliation mask make sure you restore hydration to your skin. A hydrating serum is a great option!
